The benefits of
Networking
|
- Printers, modems, CD ROMs,
scanners, plotters, mass storage devices, etc.
may be shared by all networked
users.
- By running programs from a
server, users have access to the same standard
of facilities, promoting the fertilization of
ideas, working practices and support between
users. Software upgrades become simpler, since
only the server needs to be upgraded with very
minor path alterations to individual
PCs.
- Files may be accessed by
individuals, groups or everyone, thereby
eliminating several copies of the same files and
making sure that users work on the most
up-to-date copy of a file.
- Security is greatly
enhanced, since a network has several levels of
password protection, making unauthorized entry
impossible. Individual PCs however, may be
accessed by anyone.
- Data stored on a network is
safer, since only one central source, the
server, needs to be backed up. Backup is usually
performed daily.
Network Implementation
Procedure:
Phase 1: Pre-installation
Consultation, 1-3 days.
Client requirements are
investigated for hardware and software, as well as
the location of the hardware for a cabling
schematic. Potential problems are pinpointed at
this stage. User interviews and an on-site survey
is usually required. Once complete, an accurate and
fully comprehensive quotation for the project will
be presented along with time frames.
Phase 2: Installation, 4-10
days.
Server setup is usually
completed off-site and is fully configured
alongside one of SimNet's servers. During this
time, the cable is laid and necessary network
boards and software are installed on individual PCs
at the client site.
When the server is completed, it is delivered to
the client and connected to the cabling. Users are
setup, printers and other peripherals are
connected, software is installed, PCs are
configured, all components are tested and the
supervisor is trained. At this point the network is
up and running with all users connected.
The supervisor will be given the minimum training
necessary to help users with this new environment,
but depending on his/her level of competency, may
need additional support from SimNet. A support
contract will also be recommended at this
stage.
Phase 3: Post-installation
Consultation, 1-3 days.
Three to six weeks after the
client's server going live, a SimNet consultant
will make a site visit to review the working
practices concerning the network. Client issues may
be addressed at this point and, if necessary,
additional consultation related to additional
training, security, anti-virus implementation,
system audit and network documentation may be
arranged.
